Table of Contents: Houses and Clans

The Grand Master has allowed the Dark Jedi within the Brotherhood to organize into Clans,
with each Clan consisting of several Houses.
The Brotherhood's system of Houses and Clans is explained below.

Battleteams - Battleteams are the basic organisational unit within the Dark Brotherhood, under the command of a Battleteam Leader. These teams are grouped within a particular House, all aligned to the same Order. Battleteams consist of a maximum of twelve (12) members. Battleteam Leaders are the first true level of command in the Dark Brotherhood. They also make recommendations to their House Quaestor and Aedile for promotions and awards for Battleteam members. Lastly, Battleteam Leaders are responsible for the generation of activity within their team, either with internal competitions or running competitions against or with other Battleteams. The structure of Battleteams is detailed in the table below:

A member of a Battleteam is assigned upon completing training at the Shadow Academy with a rank of Novice. Further ranks and awards can be gained by being active in the Battleteam. Members must be in a Battleteam to compete in Vendettas and other sanctioned competitions. If a member is not in a Battleteam, he/she is placed within the Rogues to retain their rank and awards.

Houses - Houses are the next level of structure, containing up to three (3) Battleteams, allowing a maximum membership of thirty-eight (38). These teams are aligned to one Order, as is the House as a whole. Houses are led by a Quaestor and an Aedile. The Quaestor is the primary command position in the House, with the Aedile acting as an assistant and acting commander when the Quaestor is on leave. House leaders are expected to report regularly to their Clan summit, as well as their respective Order Leader. Houses are also expected to have a current website detailing current events, competitions, an up-to-date roster as well as links to their Clan site and the main Dark Brotherhood site. Houses also have the honour of recieving titles during Rite of Supremacy Vendettas. These titles are awarded to the top placing Houses and are associated by Order. For example, the first placing Sith House would recieve the title "First House of the Sith". These titles are held until another Rite is held and the House is displaced.

Clans - Clans are the largest organisational unit in the Dark Brotherhood, consisting of three (3) Houses, each House being aligned to the three Orders. Clans are led by a Consul, the primary command position, and the Proconsul, the secondary command role. Consuls and Proconsuls are expected to ensure the cohesive operation of all three Houses and their respective Quaestors and Aediles. Other Consul/Proconsul duties include reports to the Deputy Grand Master and Grand Master about events, major position changes and other relevant news. Clans are unique from other units such as Houses in that they feature in a special type of Vendetta - the Clan Feud. In a Clan Feud, two Clans compete for the ownership of possessions. These possessions are usually acquired previously in other Vendettas, such as a Great Jedi War. Clans can also hold titles, similar to Houses, for placing in a Rite of Supremacy, such as "First Clan", "Second Clan" and so on. These titles are held for the duration between Rites and the use is discontinued upon another Clan holding that place.Houses, being formed of members of a single order, have recognized the wisdom of associating themselves with Houses aligned with the other Orders to form Clans.

The Summit - The Summit is the collective term for the commanding positions within a Clan, its Houses and Battleteams. The leadership positions within a Clan and its subservient Houses are collectively referred to as the Summit. These leadership positions are described below.

Consul (CON) - A Consul is the chief officer of a Clan. Commanding 3 Houses, this position is one of great respect. The Consul is ultimately responsible for all events, organization, and awards within a Clan. The Consul has complete authority over his Clan (next to the Dark Council) and is responsible for the Quaestors of each of the Clan's Houses. A Consul may be of any Order, but must treat all Houses under his command with equal attention. The Consul is the highest command position achievable before moving to the Dark Consul. Duties of a Consul include sending weekly reports to the Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master, overseeing the operations of the Clan, ensuring members are properly compensated for their efforts and informing Clan members (either directly or by forwarding to Quaestors/Aediles or Battleteam Leaders) of important Dark Brotherhood news, such as Vendettas. A Consul holds the minimum rank of Battlemaster or Archpriest.

Proconsul (PCON) - A Proconsul is the second in command of a Clan, aiding the Consul in the administration of a Clan. The duties of the Proconsul generally cover assisting the Consul in the smooth operation of the Clan. A Proconsul holds the minimum rank of Warrior or Priest.

Quaestor (QUA) - Each of the Clan's Houses is led by a Quaestor. The Quaestor serves as the leader of his House, determining to some extent the promotions and awards of his members. He should be willing to relay all pertinent information from the Dark Council to the membership, and should make sure that his house is vibrant and active. A Quaestor holds the minimum rank of Warrior or Priest.

Aedile (AED) - An Aedile is the second in command of a House. He serves to assist the Quaestor with his duties and to pass all communications, etc. to the members under his command. An Aedile holds the minimum rank of Dark Jedi Knight.

BattleTeam Leader (BTL) - The Battleteam Leader is responsible for a Battleteam, including an up-to-date roster, website and maintaining activity within the team and with other teams via competitions and other acitivities. Battleteam Leaders can also forward recommendations for promotion or awards for Battleteam Members. Battleteam Leaders hold the minimum rank of Guardian.

Promotions - Each position of power within a Clan brings a new level of possible promotion. The table below details rights in regards to promotion. Each of the Brotherhood's Clans is based in a system in the Brotherhood's Territories. The subservient Houses of that Clan are based on various homeworlds within that system. A Clan's petition to be stationed in any of the DB systems must be approved by the Grand Master of the Brotherhood.

Formation of New Clans - New Clans must be formed occasionally as Dark Jedi tend to band together. Clans will be approved by the Grand Master. A petition may be sent to the Grand Master requesting the formation of a Clan. The petition must include the following things.

  • The name of the Clan and its 3 subservient Houses.
  • Requested system and homeworlds for the Clan and its Houses.
  • A brief Clan history (~1 page long) for Dark Voice posting.
  • A Clan homepage.
  • A Clan roster showing the to-be Consul, Proconsul, and Quaestors and Aediles for each of the Houses, with each House having no less than 15 members of that House's aligned Order.

The Over-Clan - The Star Chamber is based on the ancient system of vassalage, with all the clans subinfudated to the Grand Master. The Clan system has been developed, with Houses ruling a single planet, Clans ruling a system, and the Star Chamber ruling all of known Dark Side space. Little is known about the membership of the Star Chamber, and its presence is a constant mystery to all members of the Brotherhood.
