The Dark Brotherhood maintains a strict and detailed prescription for the dress of its members. The differences in attire relate directly to the differences in rank and position, and the distinction between the three Orders of Dark Jedi.

Traditional Jedi robes

The traditional dress of the Jedi of the Old Republic was one based on the criteria of comfort and mobility. The dress consisted of inner robes, a series of approximately three layers of robe, with a long sleeved garment as the bottom most layer. A belt, trousers and boots completed the dress. These inner robes were generally cream or light brown in colour. In addition, the Jedi also wore an outer robe, which featured a hood and was a darker brown in colour. This cloak served as extra protection from the elements as well as helping to hide the identity of the Jedi to some degree. In combat and training, the removal of the outer robe was favoured, as it restricted movement and mobility. Similar robes were worn by Darth Maul, the apprentice to Darth Sidious. To a degree, the dress of members in the Dark Brotherhood is based upon that used by the Jedi and Maul. The dress code of Brotherhood members falls into three categories - Formal, Training and Duty.

Formal Dress - Formal occasions include official gatherings such as an address by the Grand Master or the promotion of a member. During these events, a member wears the inner robes and outer robe, both black in colour. The outer robe features appropriate stripes on the cuffs to designate rank. In addition, a pin is worn, indicating the member's position within the Brotherhood, and functions as a clasp on the outer robe. The wearing of the Lightsaber is permitted with this dress, so long as the member has sufficient rank to possess one. The wearing of certain awards, such as the Golden Lightsaber and Silver Sash is also permitted.

Training Dress - When conducting official training, members are to wear their inner robes. This is to allow maximum freedom and comfort while training. The lightsaber may be worn if the member has sufficient rank. No other decoration or awards are allowed to be displayed.

Duty Dress - While on or off duty, members are permitted to wear their inner robes or other suitable clothing such as utilitarian clothing. No decorations of any sort are worn, although a lightsaber may be carried if the member wishes. The outer robe may also be worn, but is not required.

Formal Robes of the Brotherhood

The formal robes are those worn during ceremonial occasions and are the only time that a visual marker of a member's rank and power is displayed. Rank is designated via a system of stripes on the cuffs of the outer robe. The system of stripes and how they relate to the ranks is laid out in the table below:
